President Michel sends message of condolences

Jacqueline PierreThe death has occurred of Miss Jacqueline Pierre, the Chief Executive Officer of the Agency for Social Protection. President James Michel has sent a message of condolences to her family yesterday, the President's office announced in a press release.

Miss Pierre, who had a long and distinguished career in the civil service, taking the head of the Social Welfare Agency and its successor since 2009, recently suffered a stroke and had been in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the Seychelles Hospital where she died.

‘It is with great sadness that I heard of the demise of Miss Pierre. This loss is a terrible shock to us all. She was a remarkable woman, whose compassion, determination and energy were an inspiration to us all,‘ said President Michel in his message, adding that she will be greatly missed and mourned by the Seychellois nation.

Miss. Pierre began her career in 1973, at the age of 18, as a Clerical Assistant in the National Provident Fund, which later in I979 became the Social Security Fund, and has since been transformed into the Agency for Social Protection. In March I979 she was promoted to the post of Social Security Inspector.

The Social Security Fund, created to provide benefits for retired citizens as well as those suffering from long term debilitating illnesses and disabilities, over the years saw the participation of many enthusiastic young people and Miss Pierre was one of them.

In 1980 she was promoted to a higher executive position and in 1986 became the Assistant Director of Compliance before taking up the post of Director of the Means Testing Board in 998 and rising further to the post of Director General for Social Security in 2005.
